Chism looking to play for 'deeper, stronger' Rain or Shine squad

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Former PBA Commissioner’s Cup Best Import Wayne Chism felt Rain or Shine got deeper and stronger this season after making some player movements in the offseason.

The 6-foot-8 Chism, who is eyeing a third tour of duty with the Elasto Painters this year, is in town for several days already as he roots for the team he led to a runner-up finish in the Commissioner’s Cup last season.

“They (Elasto Painters) look good and they’re very deep, especially they got big, because they got big guys down there and the rookie guards are also playing very well,” Chism told Philstar.com with his customary smile at the halftime of the Rain or Shine-Barangay Ginebra match on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The former Tennessee Volunteer big man was particularly impressed with the hard-banging Jewel Ponferada, who despite, giving up at least seven inches in height, managed to hold his own defensively against Ginebra’s Greg Slaughter.

“He’s (Ponferada) doing good. I like his activity out there because the way he plays is  making me happy,” beamed the 28-year-old Chism, who owns PBA career averages of 24.7 points, 15.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks in two seasons.

Chism said he’s just waiting for Rain or Shine management’s official contract offer, though he’s flying back to Bangkok on Monday to support his wife, who currently plays a volleyball tournament in Thailand’s capital city.

“Hopefully someone (from Rain or Shine management) calls and I’ll be here,” he said.

“I can’t wait to play here again and if I get the opportunity again, I’ll be happy and il make the best of it and try to get a championship.”
