Mayweather: Pacquiao piggybacking off my name

Dino Maragay - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently belied reports about a possible rematch between him and Manny Pacquiao, saying his former rival is just using his name for publicity.

Reacting to Pacquiao’s previous statement that he is negotiating with Mayweather for a rematch, the retired boxer dismissed the claim as just a publicity stunt.

"I'm in different cities in different countries and I hear people talking about Mayweather-Pacquiao 2,” Mayweather told Ben Thompson of fighthype.com.

The undefeated American outpointed Pacquiao last May in boxing’s richest fight ever, and he made sure to stress that fact.

"Once again, I dissected this fighter [Pacquiao], the so-called 'best fighter of our generation'. I dissected him; probably was 10 to 2, really 11 to 1, but it's safe to say 10 to 2. 'Mayweather is so boring, he's this, he's that!' I'm boring enough to do the biggest and the best numbers in pay-per-view history," Mayweather continued.

After defeating Pacquiao, the former pound-for-pound king fought once more in September – dominating Andre Berto – before announcing his retirement.

Pacquiao, for his part, is looking to fight one more time in April next year before similarly calling it quits to focus on his political career. Among the opponents being considered are Amir Khan, Terrence Crawford and most recently Timothy Bradley, who stopped Brandon Rios on Sunday to strengthen his case for a rubber match with Pacquiao.

But the fighting congressman himself previously made it clear he wants another shot at Mayweather, who in turn dismissed Pacquiao’s claim.

Mayweather insisted that Pacquiao is just using his name to sell his comeback fight.

"It's all [expletive]. What they're doing is this, once again, piggybacking off my name to sell pay-per-view numbers when he do go out there and fight again," he explained.
