MANILA, Philippines - Triathletes take their act to the province of Bohol for the Safeguard for Men 5i50 Triathlon, the record-breaking, season-ending endurance race blasting off on Sunday in Panglao and Dauis.
A new high of 750 novice and seasoned competitors will answer the starting gun in the 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run event sponsored by Safeguard for Men and dubbed as “tri-cation” for combining triathlon and vacation in the land of the famous Chocolate Hills and the tarsier, the world’s second smallest primate.
This year’s field easily surpassed the 650 turnout last year.
Heading the cast in the event organized by Sunrise Events, Inc. are seasoned pros Sam Betten, Justin Granger, 2013 champion Mitchell Robins, Michael Murphy, Dan Brown, Belinda Granger and Dimity-Lee Duke – all from Australia and top Filipina pro Monica Torres.
Filipino Elite triathletes Banjo Norte, Paul Jumamil, August Benedicto, Claire Adorna, Kim Mangrobang, Jenny Guerrero and LC Langit also signed up for the event, the local version of the world’s largest Olympic distance triathlon series, which also caps SEI’s series of triathlon races this year.
“Our aim with this event is to encourage even more people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and embrace multisport training and racing. While we recognize that people may have an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event as a ‘bucket list’ item, we also realize that you need to start somewhere and this event does exactly that,” said SEI president Wilfred Uytengsu, who is also participating in the event.
Other backers of the event are 2GO Express as official courier and logistics partner, venue hosts province of Bohol and The Bellevue Resort, the Municipalities of Panglao and Dauis as bike course partners, Powerade, Wilkins Pure, Prudential Guarantee, Newton Running, TYR, Garmin, Rudy Project, David’s Salon, Intercare. Alaska, Shotz Nutrition, Smart, Bohol Bee Farm, Hotel Partners, The Bellevue Resort and Bluewater Panglao and media partners The Philippine Star, Trilife, AsiaTri and FinisherPix and marketing partners Devant, Regent, Purefoods, Sexy Chix, Motorace, Sante Barley and Prozza.
Other supporters are the Department of Tourism-Central Visayas, which has guaranteed another successful staging of the event.
