Tigers, Eagles, Altas, Wolves score in Fr. Martin cagefest

MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, the University of Perpetual Help Altas and the Infant Jesus Academy Blue Wolves repulsed separate rivals to claim the remaining quarterfinal and semifinal berths in the 13th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament.

Miguel Hizon hit 12 points for the Growling Tigers as they beat Diliman College, 70-68, to finish the elimination round with their fourth win in seven games in Group B, Sunday at the Far Eastern University gymnasium in Morayta.

This put the Growling Tigers in the quarterfinals, and they are set to meet the Blue Eagles on November 7 at 12:30 p.m. at the Arellano University gym in Legarda Manila.

The Blue Eagles earlier waylaid the San Sebastian Stags, 67-57, with CJ Perez leading with 16 points, and they have a 6-1 slate at no. 2 position in Group A.

They were joined in the quarterfinals by the San Beda-B Red Lions, with their 4-2 card, top entry Arellano University (5-1) and fourth placer AMA Computer University (3-4).

Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said the semifinals of the senior division is on November 14 while the championship matches will take place the following day on November 15.

The Altas defeated Mary the Queen College, 98-80, and then defaulted their last game with St. Michael College-Laguna to make the cut to the quarterfinals at 5-2.

The no. 2 finishing Altas joined top qualifier San Beda-A (7-1), the Growling Tigers and Angeles University Foundation (2-4).

In the junior division, the Blue Wolves got 19 points from Jerome Ibay as they nipped Lyceum, 102-74, to end Group A with a 4-3 slate, and reach the semis with the unbeaten AMA Junior Titans (8-0).

They will face National University, which topped Group B at 4-2.

Manila Patriotic School won over San Benildo, 78-74, to grab a semis slot in Group B, and they will meet the AMA Junior Titans in the fight for a championship seat.
