Navy downs Coast Guard for 1st V-League win
MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Navy relied on Lilet Mabbayad's heroics as it drowned Coast Guard, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, Sunday to snare its first victory in the Shakey's V-League Season 12-Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
Mabbayad led all hitters with 18, 15 of which came on kills, as the Lady Sailors booked their first triumph in this Shakey's sponsored tournament after dropping their conference debut to the State U Lady Maroons, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25, last week.
"We just want to get the win after our heartbreaking loss to UP," said Mabbayad, who also had two blocks and a service ace, in Filipino.
It helped that Pau Soriano, a new recruit who is a former Adamson star, provided the needed support after she contributed 11.
Janet Serafica kept Navy's attack going with 34 excellent sets, most of which benefiting the crisp-hitting Mabbayad and Soriano.
Coast Guard kept it close by pouncing on Navy's errors, which totaled 34 as against the latter's 2
But the Lady Sailors made up for their superb court coverage with 34 digs.
The Lady Dolphins fell to their second straigth defeat after losing to heavy title favorite PLDT Home Ultera, 10, 25, 11-25, 20-25, also last week.
