IPTL Profiles: Milos Raonic (Philippine Mavericks)

The Philippine Mavericks recently acquired new blood in the form of Milos Raonic. Though the name “Milos Raonic” may not ring any bells for the uninitiated tennis fan, Mavericks fans will be glad to know that the Canadian player has more to offer than just a catchy name.

Milos Raonic was born on December 27, 1990 in the picturesque city of Podgorica, Montengro, just a hundred miles from the Adriatic Sea. Due to the Yugoslav War, the Raonic family had to move to Canada when Milos was just 3 years old. Like many pro players, Milos started young, playing tennis at Ontario’s Blackmore Tennis Club at the age of 8. The Canadian soon rose up as a formidable player, turning pro at the age of 18 in 2008.

Milos won his first ATP tour title in 2011 by beating Fernando Verdasco, the No. 9 ranked player in the world at the SAP Open in San Jose, California. It was the first time a Canadian player won an ATP player since 1995. Milos has since then forged a career winning at the Chennai Open in India and the SAP Open, both in 2012. In 2014, Milos nearly clinched his first Grand Slam but was stopped by Roger Federer. Nonetheless, the battle with Federer improved Milos’ ranking to #6.

Currently, Milos Raonic holds a career high 4 titles with a 201-101 win-lose record. He has 6 titles under his belt and is currently ranked at #9.
