Aussie boxer dies after KO to Pinoy

MANILA, Philippines - Australian boxer David “Davey” Browne Jr. passed away yesterday, four days after he was knocked out by Filipino Carlo Magali in a scheduled 12-round bout at the Ingleburn RSL Club in New South Wales, Australia.

The 28-year-old Browne fought Magali for the IBF Pan-Pacific junior-lightweight crown before his hometown fans.

No one knew it would be his last.

Browne, father of two young boys, carried a 22-2-1 record and a seven-fight winning streak against Magali, fighting out of Talibon in Bohol.

Based on boxrec.com, Browne, who stood 5’11” and was six inches taller than Magali, was barely ahead on the three cards when he was knocked out in the 12th round.

Six months ago, another Australian boxer, Braydon Smith, died due to injuries sustained in a fight, also against a Filipino, John Vincent Moralde, in Queensland, Australia.

Magali is also 28 with a ring record of 19-7-3. He has 10 knockouts in his name and has been knocked out once.

The Filipino is not new to fighting overseas, having fought twice in Japan in 2009, winning both, and once in Russia in 2013, losing to Andrey Bogdanov on points.

Reports said Browne was knocked out cold and was rushed by paramedics to the nearest hospital where he immediately had a brain scan.

The McArthur Chronicle said Browne’s wife, Amy, couldn’t believe what the doctors said.

“The words were, ‘He’s not going to make it’,” said the wife.
