MANILA, Philippines - Cagayan de Oro’s Mary Aubrey Calma beat Butuan City’s Angeli Esguerra and townmate Gennifer Pagente to bag two titles while siblings Ernest and Christopher Sonsona dominated the boys’ side in the Surigao City leg of the Cebuana Lhuillier age-group tennis tournament in Surigao City recently.

Calma swept Esguerra, 6-0, 6-4, to nail the girls’ 18-U crown then added the 16-U title with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 win over Pagente in the tournament hosted by the DPWH Tennis Club and backed by Asiatraders Corp., makers of Dunlop balls.

Ernest Sonsona, meanwhile, trounced CDO’s Steve Palasan, 6-2, 6-3, to cop the 18-U diadem while Christopher took the 10-unisex title with a 4-1, 4-1 romp over Kurt Bandolis.

In other results, Brent Cortes beat local bet Rupert Tortal, 4-6, 7-6, 10-5, to snare the boys’ 12-U crown while Nicholle Bonilla turned back Yna Monteclaro, 6-4, 5-7, 11-9, to clinch the girls’ 12-U diadem.

Spencer Codilla ruled the boys’ 14-U section with a 6-4, 6-7, 14-12 decision over Steven Sonsona while Pagente pocketed the girls’ title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Regine Entoc.

Jose Pague copped the boys’ 16-U title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Palasan.

“This is a continuing commitment to support Philippine tennis by providing provincial players the opportunity to play competitive tennis to hone their games in a year-round series in various places,” said Cebuana Lhuillier president/CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Angeles City will host the next leg on Oct. 24-29 at the Angeles City Tennis Club.
