MANILA, Philippines – Richard Gasquet leads the triumphant pack of the Philippine Mavericks seeing action in the Cincinnati Masters.
Gasquet mounted a brilliant 6-2, 6-1 sweep to send Nick Kyrgios packing from the US Open series tournament early Wednesday.
The Maverick went on a roll early until Singapore Slammers' Kyrgios called for a medical timeout, according to a report by Skysports.com. Gasquet was leading in the first set then, 4 games to 1.
Meanwhile, Borna Coric defeated another young star in Alender Zverev to open his Western & Southern Open campaign in a hard-fought battle.
Coric weathered the third set to win, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5), in a match that lasted two hours and 44 minutes.
Gasquet will be facing Thanasi Kokkinakis in the next match, while Coric is scheduled for a tussle with 2015 Roland Garros king Stan Wawrinka.
Meanwhile, Gasquet's compatriot and another fellow Maverick Jo-Wilfried Tsonga got the Cincy boot at the hands of Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
Tsonga lasted until the third round before bowing out of contention, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
In the women's side, Sabine Lisicki's lethal swing wasn't enough to lift her past Caroline Garcia, who also needed three sets to dispatch the former.
Lisicki looked sharp in the first set, winning it 6-3, before falling prey in the next two, 3-6, 4-6.
Gasquet, Coric, Tsonga and Lisicki are all due to suit up for the Mavericks in the International Premiere Tennis League.
They will be led by World No. 1 Serena Williams who is also scheduled for a visit here when the tournament reaches fever pitch. The second leg of the IPTL is set for a Manila stop.
Williams is headed for a second round collision course with Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round of the W&S.
Kyrgios, on the other hand, will play for the Singapore Slammers.
