Samantha Martirez and Bernice Olivarez-Ilas made up for their wobbly showing the last time out by ruling their respective divisions in the Skylinks Summer Golf Championship at the Skylinks Golf Club in California last Monday.
Martirez, who hobbled to finish fourth in last week’s Lakewood Summer Championship, also in California, hit two birdies against a double bogey to match par 72 then nipped local bet Amy Matsuoka in the countback to snare the premier 14-18 crown.
It was the ICTSI-The Country Club bet’s second international victory, which is expected to further boost the 16-year-old shotmaker’s confidence as the team sets out for a number of tournaments in the next three weeks.
Over in Portland, Princess Superal failed to rebound from an opening 75 with a 78 and missed the cut by five, together with compatriot Daniella Uy, who carded a second 77, after the 36-hole stroke play elims.
Teammate Sofia Chabon, who also won the West Lake Summer plum last month, stumbled with a triple-bogey eight on the par-5 11th and settled for third with a 73 while Abby Arevalo, winner at Lakewood last week, ended up tied for fourth with a 74.
Olivarez-Ilas gunned down two birdies but fumbled with five bogeys although her three-over 75 proved enough to net her the 12-13 crown in the 18-hole tournament.
The young shotmaker, who wavered in the final round in last week’s Lakewood tilt, also ruled her division in the West Lake Summer tournament, also in California.
