Rousey shuts Correia’s mouth, wins UFC crown in 34 seconds

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Bethe Correia talked trash against Ronda Rousey going into their much-awaited fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. She ended up eating all of it.

Rousey knocked down Correia in just 34 seconds to successfully defend her bantamweight title for the sixth straight time in the main event of UFC 190 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

The win kept Rousey’s unbeaten record to 12 and the third straight fight that was concluded fast after winning by 16 and 14 seconds in her last two underscoring her reputation as one of the most dominant athletes in the world.

The end came when Correia fell on her face after receiving a knee to the stomach and flush right to the face.

“Instead of trying to force a clinch, I planned to overwhelm her striking so she would want to clinch first, and that’s exactly what happened,” Rousey said during post-fight interview.

After the bout, Rousey dedicated the win to his late dad and pro wrestling icon Roddy Piper, whose nickname “Rowdy” the champion adopted.

“I hope him and my dad had a good time watching this today.”

It was also a sweet win for Rousey, who engaged Correia in a war of words leading to their showdown.

“I hope nobody picks on my family any more when it comes to fights. I hope this was the last time,” said Rousey in a Kevin Iole story at Yahoo! Sports.

She also relished beating Correia, who was undefeated in nine fights going into this duel, at her game.

“She can’t say anything about my hands any more, huh?” she said.
