MANILA, Philippines - Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. will launch next week the inaugural Phoenix Premium 98 Amateur Open series, with the aim of developing the country’s amateur golf talents as a long-term sports program.
The three-leg golf series, under Phoenix Philippines Foundation, seeks to discover raw talents with full potential especially on the men’s side, by providing the proper platform to pit their skills in a friendly and competitive nature.
To elevate the level of competition, the tournament will have an Open Division for participants with very low handicap indices, ensuring top-notch competition in all legs.
“We want to do our part in helping Philippine golf,” said Phoenix vice president for external affairs Atty. Raymond Zorrilla. “The sport’s growth, local and regional, has been immense and Phoenix wants to encourage the kids to participate.”
Zorrilla also said Phoenix has been supporting other sports disciplines quietly and its first deep foray into amateur golf will commence with the opening two legs at Cebu Country Club on Aug. 14 and Manila Southwoods on Sept. 18.
The series will culminate at Beverly Place, which opened its second nine holes early this year, on Oct. 16, when the winners will be feted in a grand awards ceremony where fabulous prizes will also be given away.
Outstanding amateurs to come out of the series could be given special priority. “The Phoenix Philippines Foundation is ready to help if he or she is good to be on the national team,” Zorrilla said.
