Inspired Pinoy champ vows to meet Ali’s expectations
MANILA, Philippines - Having “The Greatest” by his side means a lot for Manny Pacquiao.
In fact, when Pacquiao fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing’s richest match on May 2, the Filipino icon will be looking up to Muhammad Ali for inspiration.
A day after getting picked by Ali to beat Mayweather, the WBO welterweight champion expressed delight and vowed to meet Ali’s lofty expectations by dishing out his best against Mayweather.
“Hearing that he (Ali) picks me over his compatriot is truly humbling and inspiring. I’ll do my best to live up to his expectations and that of the fans worldwide,” Pacquiao said in Pilipino, according to Aquiles Zonio of Philboxing.com.
Speaking to TMZ Sports the other day, Ali’s daughter confirmed that the boxing legend is rooting for Pacquiao against Mayweather.
“My dad is Team Pacquiao all the way,” said Rasheda Ali.
“My dad really likes Manny. He’s a huge fan of his,” she added.
Ali, as it turns out, is an admirer not only of Pacquiao the boxer, but also of Pacquiao the philanthropist.
“He knows Manny’s a great fighter...but it’s more about what he does outside the ring. He’s such a charitable person,” Rasheda continued.
Pacquiao returned the favor, likewise praising the 73-year-old Ali for his work both in the ring and outside it.
“In fact, he (Ali) serves as one of my inspirations in doing charity works outside of boxing. He’s a man of principle and a good role model for us,” Pacquiao said.
