Pacquiao to rain punches on Mayweather
MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao stressed that Floyd Mayweather hasn’t face someone like him – a heavy volume-puncher.
He vowed to make the undefeated American work in their megabuck showdown on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In a column by Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole, Pacquiao said he plans to unleash a lot of blows on Mayweather in hopes of handing the pound-for-pound king his first setback in 48 professional bouts.
At the same time, Pacquiao is wary of Mayweather’s gifts that have helped the Las Vegas-based fighter stay unbeaten.
"He [Mayweather] has very good speed and footwork, and he has punches, and that makes him look good," Pacquiao told Iole. "But it depends on the fighter he is going to fight. For me as a boxer, I know what the job is. I'm going to throw a lot of punches, a lot of hard punches.
Mayweather, known throughout his brilliant career for his near-impeccable defense and ring smarts, has never been easy to hit. But in his recent fights with Miguel Cotto and Marcos Maidana, the WBC/WBA welterweight champion had been tagged more than he gets used to.
But Pacquiao hinted that Cotto and Maidana are nowhere near him in terms of aggressiveness.
"There is nobody out there who really has thrown a lot of punches at him, but I'm going to do that. He is a very good boxer, but I know how to box and I can move side to side and throw punches," the Filipino icon insisted.
Pacquiao’s speed, whirlwind style and southpaw stance might give Mayweather trouble, that’s why most boxing observers think the fighting congressman has the best chance of defeating the American.
