Brock Lesnar leaving WWE for UFC return?
You people must be familiar with the non-fake but heavily-scripted world of sports entertainment. In a few weeks from now, the World Wrestling Entertainment will unveil the latest version of their super-popular Wrestlemania PPV. Among the matches scheduled are Sting taking on Triple H, John Cena versus Rusev, Seth Rollins versus Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt versus The Undertaker, the second edition of the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, a ladder match for the Intercontinental Title, and Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns taking on reigning and defending WWE Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar.
The event looked stacked with the big names, the young spuds, and an awesome mix of sports and entertainment.
What can possibly go wrong?
Well in the February 23 episode of Monday Night Raw, Brock Lesnar reportedly got upset backstage and ditched the show where he is scheduled to appear. Prior to this, Lesnar barely appears on Raw but with the Road to Wrestlemania upon us, let’s just say this is not the time for him to act all diva-like. Lesnar is allegedly meteorically pissed at the negotiation process between his people and Vince McMahon’s people for his new WWE contract. I am kind of confused as to why the WWE chairman would lowball “The Beast Incarnate” especially with all the perks he received like the destruction of The Undertaker’s streak, the one-sided victories against Triple H and Cena, and the light schedule that had some PPVs with little mention of the championship because Lesnar is not scheduled to participate. Brock’s current contract would release him from doing anything WWE-related from April 2015 onwards.
But then there’s this: Brock Lesnar is seen in a suit with UFC President Dana White on UFC 184!
Maybe you’re thinking, so what if Lesnar’s face gets the attention of many when flashed on TV? Well a couple of months ago, former WWE superstar CM Punk would lay waste on the WWE medical staff by talking trash on their wellness system via podcast. A week later, Punk would appear on UFC 181 and announcing to the world that he just signed a multi-fight contract with the organization.
So that could mean Brock must be thinking of the event as a parting shot to his soon-to-be former employers?
Oh Vince… this can’t be good.
It’s an awesome power play for Lesnar following the bogging down of the talks though. Putting his face on the event is enough for Brock to tell McMahon that he’s going to the competitor if they can’t agree on the terms. The WWE, UFC and even the lesser known sports entertainment and mixed martial arts companies are like NBA teams.
They have the capacity to sign, waive and underutilize.
In this case, just think of Lesnar as LeBron James, who will be probably use his early termination clause if things don’t work out with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In an interview, current WWE advocate and real-life friend Paul Heyman commented that “anything you saw him do (in UFC), he did as an unhealthy man competing at the very top level on the face of the planet. Imagine what he could have done if he was 100 percent healthy”. Of all the sports entertainers to grace real-life combat, Lesnar is the most believable. The man is the only athlete to hold an amateur wrestling, pro wrestling and UFC title ever and at 37, he has a couple of more years to push his talents to God knows where.
Lesnar joined the UFC in 2008 where he lost his first match against Frank Mir. Lesnar would then claim successive victories with the likes Heath Herring and Randy Couture (which gave him the UFC Heavyweight title) before pummeling Mir. He would then win against Shane Carwin and lose against Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem before diverticulitis forced him into retirement.
I am a pro wrestling fanatic but while I applauded his Royal Rumble match against Cena and Rollins, nothing screams pro wrestling fanatic than a guy from the non-fake but heavily scripted world of sports entertainment mauling the likes of Overeem, Velasquez, Fabricio Werdum, Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt. Over the years we have seen wrestlers like Batista, Kurt Angle and Bobby Lashley to minimal success. Surely there’s a hint of WWE departure in the ruins for Lesnar and I’m pretty sure WWE knows this as well.
The fan in me would want Lesnar to wreak havoc in the current UFC heavyweight division.
But what does this say to the current WWE product after? Does this mean that Lesnar is set up to lose to Reigns, whose entry to the main event has received a lot of hate because the fans see him as raw and they would rather have Daniel Bryan in the mix? Or will Rollins attempt to use his Money in the Bank contract to party poop on the person scheduled to win the event?
But this is the easy route? What if Lesnar’s contract grants him the ability to overrule the things he doesn’t like, such as hostaging Wrestlemania or making the bosses agree to his whims to win at Wrestlemania and then give it up the Monday later?
Thus the name sports entertainment!
