UFC fighters to strut wares at MOA
MANILA, Philippines - The Ultimate Fighting Championship finally goes to the Philippines to stage a full stack of slambang duels via the “UFC Fight Night Manila” on May 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“UFC Fight Night Manila” will mark the first ever UFC event in the country, ending local fans’ long wait to get to watch topnotch MMA action live, possibly one featuring Fil-Am Mark Muñoz.
The historic event was formally launched yesterday in a press conference attended by UFC Asia EVP and general manager Ken Berger and SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy, whose company, SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc., is promoting “UFC Fight Night Manila.”
“Filipino fight fans are the most knowledgeable and passionate in Asia and we’re looking forward to bringing the best MMA fighters to the Philippines for the first time,” Berger said.
Berger and SMLEI president Edgar Tejerero signed a pair of gloves to signify their partnership.
“We’re excited to partner with UFC to bring the first UFC event in the Philippines. This is part of our commitment of changing the game in entertainment and bringing in all the firsts for the enjoyment and pleasure of Filipino patrons,” said Tejerero.
Although the fight card has not yet been finalized, Berger said there’s a possibility that “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Muñoz may get into the octagon in front of his countrymen.
“Muñoz is fighting in a fight coming up next month. It depends of course on how he performs,” said Berger, referring to Muñoz’s showdown with Roan Carneiro at UFC 184 on Feb. 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
“Our matchmakers will look at everything. Of course, his popularity is well established and strategically, our guys will be looking at key fighters who could help us make this a success,” he added.
