Boxer Jermain Taylor to face assault, drug charges

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Champion middleweight boxer Jermain Taylor, who already faces charges in an August shooting, will be charged in a separate incident after a man told authorities Taylor fired a gun at him, police in Arkansas said Monday.

The Little Rock Police Department said that the man also told officers responding to a report of shots fired that Taylor pointed a gun at his wife and children.

Officers took the 36-year-old Taylor into custody without incident Monday afternoon and found he had a gun and a small amount of marijuana, according to a police report.

Police spokesman Sidney Allen said Taylor will face charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a minor and possession of marijuana.

An attorney for Taylor did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Monday.

A clerk at the Pulaski County jail said Taylor was booked Monday night. Pulaski County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Carl Minden told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that Taylor is being held in lieu of $27,000 bond.

Taylor won the International Boxing Federation middleweight title in October. He faces first-degree battery and first-degree terroristic threatening charges in connection with an August incident in which Pulaski County sheriff's deputies say Taylor shot a cousin at Taylor's home in Maumelle, Arkansas.

He has pleaded not guilty in that case, and a trial has been set for June.
