Pacquiao vs Mayweather ‘making progress’

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In the next “seven to 10 days” fight fans from around should be informed if Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao is going to happen this year.

The Los Angeles Times story yesterday said it’s “official” that Mayweather and Pacquiao are “making progress.”

It may all take place soon although it seems easier to raise a doubt if it really would.

Mayweather, the undefeated champion, and Pacquiao, the people’s champion, said they’re now ready to give the public the fight they really want to see.

“We’re making progress,” the LA Times quoted someone described as a “boxing authority” but who requested anonymity.

Apparently, Mayweather has sought a 60 percent of the purse. The fight could easily generate $200 million, and Mayweather is looking at a paycheck of $120 million.

Many are hoping that Lance Pugmire of the LA Times is the bearer of good news.

No one in the negotiations is authorized to make anything public. But the source added that an agreement could be reached in “seven to 10 days.”

The report said both camps have agreed on the venue, which is the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the drug-testing procedures before and after the fight.

There are no details on the weight although it should be at 147 pounds since both Mayweather and Pacquiao are champions in the welterweight division.

The date is another thing being worked out. They’re looking at May or June at the latest.

Pacquiao said the fight could be a multi-fight deal, meaning a rematch could take place by the end of the year.

Mayweather, however, may insist on a rematch clause that will only come to play if he’s not successful in the first fight.

Pacquiao said all he wants is to push through the bout.

“I’m not after material things. I just want the fight,” he said.
