Altas eye finals for juniors, women’s, men’s volley teams

MANILA, Philippines - Perpetual Help seeks to send all its teams to the finals in juniors, men’s and women’s divisions while St. Benilde, Lyceum, Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College are out to foil the Altas’ bid in the 90th NCAA volleyball semifinals at The Arena in San Juan City today.

The Altas battle the St. Benilde Blazers while the Lady Altas clash with the Lady Blazers in a round-robin semis with the winners clashing for the championship. The other semifinalists in the men’s side are Arellano U and Emilio Aguinaldo College and while San Sebastian and Arellano complete the ladies semis cast.

The Las Pinas-based school’s men’s spikers, champions in the last four seasons, saw their 54-match win streak snap with a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Howard Mojica and the EAC Generals. Still, the Altas finished second with an 8-1 record behind EAC, which swept the 10-team tournament.

The Lady Altas, for their part, wound up in a three-way tie for No. 2 with the Lady Blazers and the San Sebastian Lady Stags at 7-2 before settling for No. 3 after tiebreaks.

The Lady Chiefs, meanwhile, swept all their nine games to top the elimination round.

Both women’s matches will be telecast live on Aksyon TV Channel 41 at 12 noon and 2 p.m.
