Fuellas, Macias breeze thru in Andrada Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Fancied Emmanuel Fuellas and Jeremiah Macias eased out their respective rivals to lead the opening day winners in the boys’ 16-under class of the 26th Andrada Cup age-group tennis championship at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.

Fifth seed Fuellas drubbed Jonas Silva, 6-1, 6-1, while No. 7 Macias routed Michael Tan, 6-1, 6-2, to advance. Fuellas will next face Tim Gumban, who won by default over Ryuji Rosario, while Macias will next take on either Mat Steven Palasan or Jose Miguel Buenaventura.

Also advancing in the event held in honor of former Philippine Tennis Association president and now Philippine Sports Commissioner Salvador “Buddy” Andrada are Gabriel Tiamson, Athan Arejola, Lordrens Pacheco and Lee Yoon-hak.

Tiamson swept Philippe Coteron, 6-0, 6-1; Arejola repulsed Enrique Jugo, 6-1, 4-6 (10-5); Pacheco clipped Rafael Halili, 6-1, 6-3; while Lee scored a walkover win over Aljohn Talatayod.

Pacheco will take on second seed Cenon Gonzales, while Lee set himself up for a second round match with top seed John Bryan Otico in the tourney sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission, Altamar Shipping, Tru-Flex and Thadeus Sporting Goods.

John Israel Sanga stopped Lee, 0-6, 6-3 (10-7), to roll into the second round along with Jerome Silva who walked over John Rosales in the boys’ 18-U category.

John Michael Bello trounced Andrei Bernardo, 6-2, 6-0, while Abraham Marquez walked over Daniel Estanislao III to advance in the boys 12-under division.
