Tigresses, Tamaraws top UAAP athletics

MANILA, Philippines - UST pooled 478 points as it ended FEU’s 11-year reign in women’s division in UAAP athletics by winning the overall championship at the Philsports oval in Pasig recently.

The Lady Tamaraws settled for runner-up finish with 377 points while UE, behind MVP Jenyrose Rosales brilliant performance, took third with a 259.

It was UST’s fifth title overall, and first since 2001.      

FEU, however, didn’t come home empty handed as its male tracksters ruled for the fifth straight year.       

Behind Janry Ubas, who was named tournament MVP, the Tamaraws tallied 479 points to annex a record 24th title.       

De La Salle finished a surprise second with 228 points, while UST wound up third with 226 points.       

Rosales set a new league mark in the 400-meter run with 54.45 seconds. The 20-year old standout also won the gold in the 400-meter hurdles in record fashion with 1:01.15, and topped the 200-meter race with 24.73 seconds while placing second in the 800-meter race.       

Ubas recorded new marks in the long jump (7.29 meters) and decathlon (6,521 points) and also won the gold in the pole vault (4.30 meters) and triple jump (14.84 meters) while settling for silver in the high jump and javelin throw.        

The Tigresses’ long distance runner Louielyn Pamatian was named the women’s Rookie of the Year after ruling the 1500-meter run and copping bronze in both the 400-meter and 800-meter run.       

Brayan-Jay Pacheco of FEU was the top rookie in the men’s division after his gold medal feat in shot put, a runner-up finish in javelin throw and a bronze medal in discus throw.        

In junior’s action, UE tallied 390 to win gold while Ateneo (342) and De La Salle-Zobel (175) rounded out the top three. Javier Gayoso of the Blue Eaglets claimed the MVP honors.
