Chairman’s Charity Cup up at Southwoods

MANILA, Philippines - The Chairman’s Charity Cup, Manila Southwoods’ signature tournament, unwraps this Friday and Saturday with a full field of 360 gearing up for a battle royale in various divisions, including the overall championship and low gross honors, at the Legends and Masters courses.

Tony Valera, whose 68 netted him the overall crown last year, and low gross champion Thirdy Escaño, fresh from steering Team Southwoods to the Fil-Am Invitational golf championship last weekend, are expected to defend their respective crowns in the 18-hole tournament held in honor of the club’s chairman Bob Sobrepeña and backed by title sponsor Whealth Inc. (Mega Fiber).

The shotgun start tee-off is set at 7:30 a.m. at the Legends and 8 a.m. at the Masters on each day of the event backed by Mitsubishi Motors Phils. Corp./Diamond Motors Corp., Royal Caribbean/Baron Travel, Mit Air Sales Center, Netforce International, Inc., Agrexplore Corp., Turf Company and Warbird Security and Investigation Agency as Platinum presentors.

A brand-new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 GLS from Mitsubishi Motors and an Alaska cruise for two, including airfare, courtesy of Royal Caribbean International and Baron Travel will be staked as hole-in-one prizes in the tournament supported by San Miguel Purefoods, Rudy Project, Resorts World Manila and Sweet Spot Sports and Golf Equipment, Inc. as Gold sponsors and Edward Marcs Phils., Inc. as the lone Silver sponsor.

Cart Plaza Manufacturing is also putting a Yamaha Golf cart while Emperador Distillers, Inc. offers an all-expense paid trip to Spain for two for aces.

The Mitsubishi Mirage car and the Alaska cruise, however, will be raffled off if no one scores a hole-in-one, according to Southwoods general manager Mark Watson.

Other titles to be disputed in the event, backed by Bronze sponsors BDO, Camp John Hay Golf Club, Camp John Hay Coffee Services, Camp John Hay Dev’t. Co and Castillo Laman Tan Pantaleon & San Jose Law Offices, are the Men’s 1 (0-9), Men’s II (9.1-15.0), Men’s III (15.1-21), Men’s IV (21.1 and above), Seniors I (Up to 16) and Seniors II (16.1 and above).

Spicing up the tournament, supported by Club Leisure Management Corp., CP Optics, Inc., CSL Construction Corp., Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club, Foodenizer, Inc. Forest Hills Golf and Country Club, G&W Clubshares, GG&A Clubshares, Golden Oats and Golforce, Inc., are the Ladies I (Up to 18) and Ladies II (18.1 and above) tournaments plus the sponsors and guests division.

Other Bronze sponsors are Green N Turf, Manila Southwoods Manor, Media Construction and Dev’t. Corp., Meridian Equipment Services, Inc. Metro Rail Transit Dev’t. Corp., Poblador, Bautista, Reyes Law Offices, Prime Power Manpower Services, RCNA, Red Eagle Lending Investors Corp. (RELI) and Sherwood Hills Golf Club.
