MANILA, Philippines - Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite coasted to victory in the seniors division, celebrating its first ever win in the ICTSI-JGFP National Interschools Golf Championships that ended recently at the Ayala Greenfield Golf and Leisure Club in Calamba, Laguna.
The Lyceum golfers made up of national team mainstay Rupert Zaragosa, Jelbert Gamolo, Janzen Morilla and Luigi Guerrero, announced their arrival as the top collegiate team to beat by pooling 590 points to finish far ahead of former champion La Salle-Taft and College of St. Benilde in the best four out of five rounds that capped the multi-division competition sponsored by the ICTSI Foundation and organized by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines.
Zaragosa and Gamolo completed the Lyceum domination of the tourney by finishing 1-2 in the individual competition with their 213 and 199 points, respectively, with JP de Claro of the University of the Philippines placing third with his 196.
La Salle placed second with 495 and College of St. Benilde with 461 in the event also sponsored by the Philippine Golf Foundation, Martin Lorenzo, Golf Depot and Inquirer Golf. La Salle was comprised of Eric Gallardo, AR Ramos, Miggy Yee, Inigo Raymundo and Tonton Arevalo, while College of St. Benilde was composed of GJ Katigbak, Jae Min Soo, Marvin Siy and Paolo Salvador.
Earlier, Ateneo, Assumption College and Immaculate Concepcion Academy won the three divisions of girls play, La Salle Zobel took the juniors and Midgets 2 plum and Ateneo captured the Midgets 1 crown.
The top teams in the Inter-school series, including those from the Visayas and Mindanao eliminations, will collide in the national finals on Jan. 19-20 at the Orchard Golf and Country Club.
