Lady Eagles, Spikers turn back rivals, share lead

MANILA, Philippines - Titleholder Ateneo and La Salle came away with a pair of straight-set victories over Adamson and National U, respectively, to gain a share of the lead in the UAAP women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.

The Lady Eagles overwhelmed the Lady Falcons, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14, while the Lady Spikers dominated the Lady Bulldogs, 25-22, 25-12, 25-15, to notch their second straight wins in the early going of the season.       ?        

Reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez blasted 15 hits while Michelle Morente scored four blocks and finished with 12 points aside from coming up with five digs for the Lady Eagles.         ?        

So dominating were the Lady Eagles that Ateneo mentor Anusorn “Tai” Bundit had the luxury to field in rookies Maddie Madayag and Jho Maraguinot, who responded by contributing two hits apiece.       

Following up her 27-point effort against the Falcons, Ara Galang turned in 15 points, including five service aces to pace the Lady Spikers past the Lady Bulldogs, who with the Lady Falcons, dropped to 0-2.     ?       

Sophomore Kim Dy had two blocks to finish with 10 points, while Kim Fajardo tossed in 25 excellent sets and had eight points for La Salle.        ?       

Jaja Santiago was the lone Lady Bulldog in double digit with 10 points.         ?      

Jessica Galanza continued her consistent play with 12 hits, including two service aces, while Amanda Villanueva added seven points and seven hits for the Lady Falcons.
