Algieri pressure-free and ready

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao was putting on a show at the packed Wild Card Gym in General Santos City the other day while Chris Algieri was in a conference call with the press.

Algieri talked about a lot of things, including his plans to go to medical school when he’s done with boxing. He also said he’s all set to fight Pacquiao on Nov. 23 in Macau.

“All of our work is done here and now we are ready to travel across the world and shock the world,” said the 30-year-old boxer who was also into wrestling and kick-boxing.

Algieri did some sparring in Los Angeles and took the long flight to Macau. He arrives at the former Portuguese colony today, three days ahead of the Filipino champion.

Tim Lane, who trains Algieri, was also in the call along with the boxer’s handler, Joe DeGuardia, and Top Rank chief Bob Arum.

Lane said Algieri is done with the hard work in training, and that the camp went smoothly, pressure-free.

“Chris has been handling the pressure like there is no pressure.  There is a lot of relaxation and meditation and ice baths after workouts,” said Lane.

“This is the Chris Algieri show, like I said before, this is what he had visualized for years and now he has the situation the way he has always dreamt about having it.  This is a dream come true so there is no pressure,” he said.

Pacquiao worked out for over two hours Wednesday and amazed a lot of visitors with his boundless energy inside the gym.

The reigning WBO welterweight champion is in peak form with just over a week before the fight. He was scheduled to spar six rounds yesterday.

“Then we go down to four rounds on Saturday and three on Monday,” said Freddie Roach.

After Monday’s workout, Pacquiao and his entourage of over 300 people will board two A320 jets to be provided by AirAsia and head for Macau.
