Gonzales, Cano cop PCA junior crowns
MANILA, Philippines - Second seed Cenon Gonzales Jr. and No. 6 pick Joshua Cano took different routes but produced the same results, topping their respective divisions in the 33rd PCA Open at the PCA indoor shell clay courts in Paco, Manila.
Gonzales rebounded from a second set meltdown to frustrate No. 5 Vincent Alanis, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, and capture the boys’ 16-under crown while Cano dominated No. 7 Argil Lance Canizares, 6-4, 6-3, to pocket the boys’ 18-U crown in the event presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings.
Canizares later teamed up with Kyle Parpan to cop the boys’ 18-U doubles title, beating Kyle Joseph Parpan and Chris Prulla, 8-6.
Fahd Banico and Jose Maria Pague took the boys’ 14-U doubles crown with a similar 8-6 win over Marcus Del Rosario and Manuel Balce III in the tournament backed by Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Manny Pacquiao, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc. and Seno Hardware.
Meanwhile, action resumes Saturday with defending champions Johnny Arcilla and Marian Jade Capadocia setting out for their respective title retention drives in the annual tournament backed by United Auctioneers Inc. Foton, Philippine Sports Commission, TLH Sports & Wellness Center/Solinco, Avida Land Corporation, Stronghold Insurance, Ryobi MHI and GMA 7.
