Cabrera beats Domingo, dominates Petron karting
MANILA, Philippines - Seaoil-DC’s Gabriel Tayao Cabrera bested seasoned campaigner Bobby Domingo to stretch his winning streak to five in the 2014 Petron Blaze 100 ROK Cup Karting Super Series at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga recently.
The victory steered the 14-year-old Makati Hope Christian School Grade 10 student to another double title feat, winning both the ROK Overall plum over Domingo and ROK Junior crown against Jacob Ang of Eagle Cement in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines.
Cabrera also became the first junior karter to win the ROK overall crown for the fifth straight time.
Cabrera flashed superb form to humble the more-experienced Domingo and firm up his bid for the ROK Overall diadem with 278 points in the event sponsored by Petron, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4, Petron XCS, Petron Ultron, Petron Xtra, Petron Sprint, Magnolia Pure Water and Yokohama.
Cabrera topped the Time Trials in 1:05.612 but didn’t press his bid and just stayed behind Domingo, who ruled the qualifying heat. After his crew made adjustment on his set-up, Cabrera took control over Domingo and rule the pre-final race.
Gaining more confidence, he pulled away over the rest in the 12-lap Final Race and went on to capture the checkered flag in 13 minutes and 0.186 of a second, 1.818 seconds ahead of Domingo.
Jacob Ang checked in third while Wayne Darvin of Total Racing and Jerry Choi came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Domingo eventually clinched the ROK Senior Blaze 100 title over Darvin and Choi and likewise copped the ROK Shifter Blaze 100 plum over Darvin and third placer Michael Jordan while Ang claimed the ROK Clubman Blaze 100 crown over Choi and Francis Cruz.
