Palanca boosts La Salle-Zobel’s Inter-school bid

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Philippe Palanca played the topscoring role as La Salle-Zobel outscored Ateneo by a mere two points to stay on top in the Midgets 1 division of the ICTSI-JGFP Inter-school golf championship at the South Links course in Las Piñas.

With team top gun slowing down with 44 points, Palanca fired 50 while Jolo Magcalayo added 47 for La Salle-Zobel’s 141 for the day and 592 for four rounds.

That put Ateneo’s title retention bid in danger as the Blue Eagles managed just 139 for 581 with Aidric Chan unable to play. Carl Corpus made 54 and Marc Corrales had 47 but Riggs Illescas could only score a 38.

At Ayala Greenfields, Ateneo remained far ahead in Girls 1, Assumption kept a big lead in Girls 2 and Immaculate Concepcion Academy appeared beyond reach in Girls 3 of the tourney backed mainly by the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. Foundation.

The Philippine Golf Foundation, Martin Lorenzo, Golf Depot and Inquirer Golf are also supporting the multi-bracket featuring more than 500 junior players all over the country.

Paulina Sotto turned in her best effort in three rounds of 51 and Charlene Abalos had 37 for Ateneo’s 88 for the round and 183 total, far ahead of La Salle’s 123.

Bianca Pagdanganan and Sam Bruce both had 47s for Assumption which totalled 345 against the 299 of St. Paul’s College and ICA had 76-274 on the 44 of Mariel Tee and 32 of Justine Teh to leave La Salle-Zobel (60-192).

Alido kept a slim point lead over Corpus, 204-203, in their tight duel for the Midgets 1 individual plum. The girls leaders were Abalos, Annika Cedo of St. Paul’s and Jona Magcalayo of DLSZ.

Action resumes today with the juniors at Valley and Midgets 2 at Eastridge.
