The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Southwestern University Cobras dumped USC Warriors, 60-49, in Game 3 of their best-of-five championship series and tightened their grip on CESAFI-Cebu and PCCL Southern Islands overall titles.

Leading 28-20 in the first half, coach Yayoy Alcoseba’s Cobras continued their dominance in the second half to post the crucial win.

The Cobras, bidding for the CESAFI title, are also eyeing a back-to-back Champions League (PCCL) Southern Islands overall crown. Both the Cobras and the Warriors are in the Elite Eight of the National Collegiate Championship.

In the Vis-Min qualifying knock-out games, University of Visayas Green Lancers bested University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 56-55, in a hard-fought game to advance to the Elite Eight.

Teams already in the Elite Eight phase are newly crowned UAAP champion National University Bulldogs, UAAP runner-up FEU Tamaraws, NCAA finalists San Beda Red Lions and Arellano University Chiefs, CESAFI finalists SWU Cobras and USC Warriors and Vis-Min qualifier UV Green Lancers. One seat is reserved for the Luzon-Metro Manila elims.

Two more regional games are scheduled during the first week of November to determine the qualified teams for the Luzon-Metro Manila qualifying games. The South Luzon-Bicol games will be held at J.C. Lobredo Coliseum, Naga City Nov. 3-4, with the participation of champion teams from Sorsogon, Quezon province, Naga, Tabaco, Batangas, Cavite and Laguna.

The North-Central Luzon regional games, slated Nov. 3-5 at Lyceum North Western University Gym in Dagupan, will have collegiate champions of Vigan, Baguio-Benguet, Pangasinan, La Union, Pampanga and Zambales.
