MANILA, Philippines - Rizal Technological University turned back last year’s champion San Beda College Alabang, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20, in sudden death to annex the 45th WNCAA senior volleyball crown at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last Sunday.

San Beda, the top seed which swept all its seven elimination matches, took the finals opener, 25-13, 25-23, 25-14 but RTU forced a decider with a 27-25, 27-25, 13-25, 25-19 win in Game 2.

The midgets duel between Miriam College and St. Paul College Pasig are tied at one game apiece. St. Paul won Game 1, 25-19, 25-16, last Saturday but Miriam bounced back the following day, 12-25, 25-22, 25-21. Game 3 is set this Saturday, also at RMC.

Miriam prevailed in the junior finals opener against St. Scholastica’s College, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be held this weekend.

San Beda won the playoff for third over deposed champion De La Salle Zobel, 22-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-20.

In midgets basketball, DLSZ copped its fourth straight championship after sweeping St. Stephen’s High School, capped by a 35-11 triumph. The Archers also scored a lopsided victory in the series opener, 41-17.

Host La Salle College Antipolo, meanwhile, unseated Chiang Kai Shek College in junior basketball as it escaped with a 51-46 Game 3 victory. Game 1 went CKSC’s way, 54-50, but LSCA took Game 2, 76-61.

Named Most Valuable Players were RTU’s Shana Marie Costillas (senior volleyball), LSCA’s JC Mae Riel (junior basketball) and DLSZ’s Akemi Marteja (midgets basketball).

In junior futsal, DLSZ will defend its title against Miriam in the winner-take-all finals this Sunday at the CEU gym. St. Paul and Assumption will dispute third place.

Centro Escolar University had earlier won the senior basketball and senior futsal titles, beating RTU in both events.
