Suarez settles for silver after decision loss to Mongolian foe

INCHEON, South Korea – Boxer Charly Suarez on Friday came up short in his attempt to add another gold to the country's thin medal vault, losing a heartbreaking split decision to Mongolia's Otgibdalai Dorjnyambuu in the lightweight finals in the 14th Asian Games at the Seonhak Gymnasium here.

Suarez pressed his attack from the start, opening a cut above the left eyebrow of Dorjnyambuu.

Kazakhstan judge Rakhymzhan Rysbayev awarded all rounds to Suarez, 30-27, but the two other judges – Argentina's Gerardo Mariano Poggi and Germany's Mikhail Aradovskiy – saw it otherwise in favor of Dorjnyambuu with identical scores, 29-28.

The loss ended the Phl boxing's campaign here with only a silver to show along with three bronzes courtesy of Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, bantamweight Mario Fernandez and middleweight Wilfredo Lopez.

Phl's medal haul still stood at one gold courtesy of BMX racer Daniel Caluag along with three silvers and nine bronzes with the country's remaining chance to add hinges on Taekwondo and Karate in the last day of competitions.
