Beckham's earnings drop 10 percent after retiring
LONDON — David Beckham's income from personal sponsorship deals dropped by around 10 percent in the year the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star retired from football.
The 2013 accounts for the company that handles Beckham's personal endorsements, Footwork Productions, showed that revenue dropped to 14.8 million pounds ($24 million) from 16.5 million pounds (then $27 million) in 2012.
The former England captain stopped playing in May 2013 after five months at Paris Saint-Germain, having left Major League Soccer in December 2012 following more than five years at the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham took no pay from PSG, with his salary going to charity. The Footwork Productions accounts show that the company's main activity is the "exploitation of David Beckham's name and image rights."
Pre-tax profits climbed from 390,539 pounds ($630,500) to 12.5 million pounds ($20.2 million), although Beckham took no salary as he did in 2012 of 14.1 million pounds ($22.7 million). Instead, the company paid out 7.5 million pounds ($12 million) in dividends.
Beckham has deals to promote a host of companies including sportswear firm Adidas, clothing firm H&M and British broadcaster BSkyB.
