Kamayan golfers repulse Media, keep Eduque Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Gen. Gerry Doria took advantage of his familiarity with the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club course on Tuesday to power the Kamayan Golf Club to still another victory over the Media golfers and retain the Tito Eduque Memorial Cup in the 27th Triple V-Media Golf Classic.

Doria put together a four-under par gross of 72 and a net 60 to key Kamayan’s 18-stroke victory over Media. Coach Virgil Villavicenio added a net 63 and Mingging Ortiz and Babes Francisco pitched in a 65 each to lead the Kamayan juggernaut.

Nilo Paurom of the Inquirer led the Media challenge with a net 63, winning the overall title for the Media side tournament, but all that went for naught against the Kamayan golfers’ balanced scoring.

The 27th edition of the 18-hole dual meet between Kamayan and Media finally got going under bright sunny skies after weather forced its cancellation in 2013 and its postponement twice from this year’s original schedule on Oct. 26, birthday of the late coach and Triple V Group chairman Tito Eduque.

Eduque’s son, Dingdong, and Vicvic Villavicencio hit the ceremonial drives and awarded the prizes later at Sambo Kojin, the latest brand of the sponsoring Triple V Group of Restaurants, on EDSA.

The guest division was won on a tiebreak by Oliver Manda. Joe Cubelo finished second and Doc Cubelo third. All three players finished with identical 71s.

Jong Arcano topped Class A in the Media division with a 67, beating Anthony Suntay, who also had a 67, in the tiebreak. Buddy Resurreccion took third with a 71, also by tiebreak.

Media’s Class B winner was Alex Magno (68), followed by Jojo Robles (72) and Ernie Gonzales (73). Corrie Narisma took the Class C title with a 66, Emy Arcilla second with a 67 and Al Mendoza third with 73.

Rounding up Kamayan’s top 10 scorers were Jonas Lopez (66), Joey Bacani (68), Rene Ligon (68), Cocoy Vera Perez (69), Arnold Segundo (69) and Rod Lejano (70).

Media’s top 10 were Paurom, Narisma, Arcano, Suntay, Arcilla, Magno, Mendoza, Resurreccion, Jun Engracia (71) and Robles.

So complete was Doria’s domination of the course that he even won two of the special prices – most birdies (2) and most pars (12). The other winners of special prizes were Ortiz (nearest the pin on No. 8),  Villavicencio (nearest  on No.11), Ernie Wee (most accurate drive on No. 12), Engracia (best dressed) and Resurreccion (early bird).
