Perpetual Help, SBC-B triumph in Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines - University of Perpetual Help nipped La Salle, 73-72, while San Beda-B trounced National U, 66-49, to wrest control in their respective groups in the 12th Fr. Martin Cup Division 2 basketball tournament last weekend.

Akhuetie Bright canned in two charities in the last 22 seconds to lift the Altas past the Archers at the San Beda gym in Mendiola last Saturday.

The victory was Perpetual Help’s fifth against a loss as it moved ahead in Group A.

Benoit Mbala could have forced overtime but the top La Salle scorer, who finished with 20 points, cracked under pressure and missed his charities in the final 11.9 seconds, enabling the Altas to escape with the win.

The Green Archers slipped to 2-3.

Kevin de Castro fired 21 points as the Red Lions blasted the Bulldogs at the FEU gym last Sunday to stretch their win run to four in Group C.

The win also ended National U’s win streak at five.

In other senior games, College of St. Benilde drew 17 points from Ahmed Sardouk as it stopped National College of Business and Arts, 79-70, while Emilio Aguinaldo College defeated San Beda-A, 54-49, in the tournament backed by Bauerfeind supports and orthoses and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.

In the junior division, San Benildo waylaid San Sebastian, 61-52, and Arellano University edged Xavier School, 79-77. 

Also last Saturday, Xavier School needed an extra period to shrug off Mapua, 85-83.
