Shell Active Chess final leg in Tuguegarao

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The 22nd Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships winds up its six-leg nationwide circuit this weekend with the staging of the Northern Luzon leg at the University of Saint Louis in Tuguegarao.

The top two players and the top female player from kiddies and juniors divisions, will advance to the grand finals set at SM Megamall on Oct. 11 and 12. A total of 36 qualifiers will compete in the championships, including winners from the previous elims.

The Tuguegarao leg used to be the second stop of the annual circuit featuring the leading and rising players in the 20-and-under and 14-and-under ranks, including out-of-school youths, but now serves as the final leg of the event after the NCR, Southern Luzon (Batangas), Visayas (Cebu) and the two Mindanao stages (Cagayan de Oro and Davao).

The final leg is expected to lure not only players based in the north but also those who had failed to break through in the first five elims of the circuit. This year’s staging of the Shell Active Chess also coincides with the energy and gas technology’s centennial anniversary in the country.

The Shell Active Chess is backed by Shell FuelSave Unleaded and Diesel, Shell Fuel Oils, Shell V Power Nitro and Shell Rimula, as well as by Unilever and SM Supermalls and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Registration is ongoing with organizers expecting the maximum field of 300 to be filled up early. For inquiries and for listup on a first-come, first-served basis, contact Robert Bitamor at (0926) 255-5499 or Alex Dinoy at (0922) 828-8510.
