3 FCVBA teams advance to semis

MANILA, Philippines - The three Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) teams posted victories in varying fashions to all advanced to the semifinal round in the 23rd ASEAN Veterans basketball tournament at the Science Sports Center in Bangkok, Thailand last Thursday.

Behind former Letran star Jerry Gonzales, Julio Cruz and Ng Yuk Chi, the 50-years squad rebounded from a 38-46 defeat to the hosts last Wednesday by downing Pontianac of Indonesia, 49-43, to advance to the semis.

Backed by Freego, Rain or Shine and Ironcon Builders, the FCVBA cagers collide with Hatyai of host country for a spot in the finals.

The 60-years team, meanwhile, completed a three-game sweep of its group elims with a 39-34 victory over ZAAP, also of Thailand, with former MICAA player Zotico Tan, Peter Ley, Noli Banate and Terry Que taking charge.

They will shoot for a final berth against Pontianak.

Joseph Realista and Braulio Lim combined for 20 points as the Eton-backed 40-years team rolled to a 56-41 win over Hat Yai to likewise sweep its group elims with a 3-0 record.

Gunning for a fourth straight title in the annual event, the 40-years team battles Zaap for a spot in the championship.
