Top riders seek crucial wins in Motorsports Championship

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The battle for speed and supremacy resumes as 20 of the country’s finest drivers try to beef up their title chances this Sunday, when the action shifts to the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

Taysan Batangas Mayor Dondon Portugal and Paolo Mantolino of Ethanworxs-R33 Racing Team hope to pad their leads in their respective divisions as they seek crucial wins in this event which is part of the 2014 BRC Motorsports Championship season presented by Petronas, sponsored by Yokohama and sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP)

Portugal kept a clean slate with 120 points following his back-to-back GT300 triumph in Batangas last month. However, he’ll be facing bigger threats as comebacking seasoned veteran Velli-Matti Kaikkonen of Häfele-Tuason Racing is raring to bounce back and regain the throne he earned two years back.

Likewise, the experienced rival celebrity racer Jomari Yllana also aims to earn more points and stay within striking distance for the title.

But the biggest challenge for the frontrunning Portugal is the comeback of defending champion Jody Coseteng who finally decided to race in the GT300 and forego plans of competing in the GT200.

The expected rains will provide additional challenge in both the morning’s 10-lap sprint race and in the afternoon’s GT main race.

The young Paolo Mantolino, despite finishing second behind defending PTCC champion and Ethanworxs-R33 Racing teammate Carlos Anton, kept solo leadership in the GT200 division with 95 points.
