MANILA, Philippines – Alfred Aroga captured the UAAP Press Corps-Accel Quantum Plus/3XVI Player of the Week honors after National University won in succession against Adamson and Ateneo in the men's basketball tournament.
The Bulldogs reasserted their mastery of the Blue Eagles, 76-66, the other day and routed the Falcons, 71-50, last Wednesday to boost their Final Four bid.
NU is now tied with Ateneo in third place with seven wins and three losses, half a game behind Far Eastern University and defending champion La Salle, both sharing the league's best record at 7-2.
Thanks to the brilliant showing of Aroga, the Bulldogs have stayed inside the top four in the tight race to the semifinals.
In the past week's two victories, the Cameroonian Aroga averaged 11 points, 11.5 rebounds and five blocks per game.
Aroga played his best game this season against the Eagles, where he nearly had a triple-double performance of 15 points, 11 boards and a season-high eight blocks. His total blocks was the most by any player since King Tamaraw Arwind Santos also had eight in 2003.
“I was really prepared for this game,” said Aroga, who took over from former Mythical Team winner Emmanuel Mbe in patrolling the shaded lane for the Bulldogs this season.
In the 21-point win over the Falcons, Aroga grabbed 12 rebounds, scored seven points and had a couple of blocks.
Aroga won the weekly honor supported by Bactigel Hand Sanitizer, Mighty Mom Dishwashing and Dr. J Rubbing Alcohol over FEU's Roger Pogoy and Almond Vosotros of La Salle.
