MANILA, Philippines -- Gilas Pilipinas finally had Filipino cuisine for the first time since arriving in Miami, Florida for their week-long training camp.
The whole team went to Miramar City, a 23-minute drive from the team's hotel at JW Marriott Marquis Miami, after their morning practice on Wednesday, the fourth day of their training camp.
Gilas gunner Garry David's sister Mai and the Filipino community led by couple Jonathan and Evelyn Carpio based in Miramar hosted the lunch. The whole team including naturalized players Marcus Douthit and Andray Blatche feasted on sinigang na baka, tempura, fried lapu-lapu, chicken curry, pinakbet, seafoods kare-kare, lumpia, pancit canton and rice.
The Filipinos even had to leave from their work to warmly welcome the national team now in deep training for the FIBA World Cup in Spain next month.
Gilas forward Ranidel de Ocampo and the rest of the team were appreciative of the warm reception they have received from the Filipino Community in the United States.
