Pedrosa, Barredo bag Sun-Ming junior titles

MANILA, Philippines - Ross Pedrosa and Sarah Barredo took different routes but produced the same results as they ruled their respective divisions in the first Sun Cellular-Ming Ramos National Juniors badminton tournament Luzon leg at Powersmash in Makati recently.  

Pedrosa dominated Frell Gabuelo, 21-14, 21-18, to pocket the boys’ 19-under singles crown while Barredo battled back from a set down to repulse Aldreen Concepcion, 20-22, 21-15, 21-11, to nail the girls 19-U singles title.

Fides Bagasbas scored a walkover win over Emilio Mangubat Jr. to clinch the boys’ 17-U plum while Chanelle Lunod bagged the 17-U girls singles title with a 21-18, 13-21, 21-13 win over Janelle Andres in the tournament backed by Sun Cellular, Smart Communications, Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) Sports Foundation, and Philippine Badminton Association, Smash Pilipinas and Babolat.  

Jewel Angelo Albo turned back Ian Maui Santos, 9-21, 21-16, 21-12, to snare the boys’ 15-U crown then added the 13-U diadem with a 21-11, 21-7 rout of Charles Alcarpio in the event sanctioned by PBA and the Philippine National Ranking System (PNRS).

Maria Virginia Lopez took the girls’ 15-U crown with a 21-19, 21-10 victory over Theresa Tumbali, while Anthea Marie Gonzales edged Olivia Jean Sanvictores, 21-23, 21-13, 21-18, to cop the girls’ 13-U title.

Meanwhile, the qualifying leg for the Visayas region will be held Aug. 29-31 in Cebu City while the Mindanao elims will be played Sept. 5-7 in General Santos City.
