Floyd Sr hints at May ’15 M’weather-Pacman tiff
MANILA, Philippines - When Floyd Mayweather recently said he’s got a big surprise up for his fans, many thought and hoped it’s the fight against Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather is scheduled to face Marcos Maidana on Sept. 13 in Las Vegas but sounded like he’s looking ahead of the coming rematch.
“And then in May, I’m fighting in May and I’ll have a big surprise for y’all,” the cocky and undefeated American told LATen Media.
For fight fans, Mayweather can’t pull off any surprise bigger than him saying he’ll fight the Filipino superstar.
Time is running out on both fighters, Pacquiao being in his mid-30s and Mayweather in his late 30s.
Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr., said it’s a possibility.
“Well I’m gonna tell you this right here, it could be closer than you think,” Floyd Sr. said in a separate interview with On the Ropes Boxing Radio.
Meanwhile, the camp of Chris Algieri, after sealing the fight with Pacquiao in November, is doing the next best thing which is help drum up the fight.
The best way to do that is to say that they’re going to beat Manny Pacquiao.
“Chris is going to give Pacquiao the same troubles that he gave Ruslan (Provodnikov),” Algieri’s co-promote, Artie Pellulo, told RingTV.com.
Algieri kept his undefeated record by surviving two early knockdowns and beating Provodnikov on points last month.
That earned him a ticket to the Pacquiao derby. The other day, Top Rank chief Bob Arum said Algieri has agreed to fight Pacquiao.
Algieri will get less than what he had wanted, at least $1 million, but so much more than the $100,000 he earned against Provodnikov.
The 30-year-old boxer, who stands just a shade under six feet, knows that if he beats Pacquiao, he rises to stardom.
Pellulo said it’s bound to happen.
