Mayweather eyeing Pacquiao fight next year?

MANILA, Philippines – Is Floyd Mayweather finally mulling to face Manny Pacquiao in what could turn out to be the richest fight in boxing history?

An online report claims the undefeated boxer’s father confirmed that his son is indeed pushing for a clash with Pacquiao in May next year.

In an article he wrote in boxinginsider.com, Ivan Goldman likewise cited a source close to Floyd Sr. who claimed the pound-for-pound king now wants to fight Pacquiao for the obvious monetary aspect.

“I thought at the time that maybe the dad was just saying that because he was trying to motivate the fight,” Goldman quoted his source as saying.

Floyd Sr. has previously gone on record that a fight between his son and Pacquiao could happen sooner than most fans expect.

Even Floyd Jr. himself hinted at a “big surprise” when he announced his rematch against Marcos Maidana recently.

“Sept. 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather, part II. And then in May, I’m fighting in May and I’ll have a big surprise for y’all,” the undefeated boxer said.

Goldman’s source likewise claimed Mayweather was referring to a fight with Pacquiao as that “big surprise.”

Pacquiao is booked to face New York’s Chris Algieri in Macau on Nov. 22, and is still very much open to a bout with Mayweather.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown is expected to shatter existing pay-per-view records and will give both fighters career-high paydays. Showtime, which owes the rights to broadcast Mayweather’s fights, would welcome the clash.

“I know Showtime will push for this fight. Where else can they get two million buys? Floyd is at a different level. He’s fighting for history,” the source added.
