Superal breezes thru in WWGA match play

MANILA, Philippines - Princess Superal dominated local bet Stani Schiavone and came away with a lopsided 5 and 4 victory to advance to the Last 32 phase of the 114th Women’s Western Golf Association match play at the Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania Wednesday.

The 17-year-old Superal, who took the No. 3 seeding after the 36-hole stroke play elims, took No. 1 with a par and didn’t yield a single hole en route to the win that set her up against Ailea Clark of California.

Clark, who wound up joint 33rd in the qualifiers, survived Jessica Porvasnik of Ohio,

The top ICTSI-backed bet braces for a grueling Thursday assignment with two matches on tap, hopeful of getting past Clark and her would-be opponent in the afternoon play for a place in the quarterfinal round of the week-long event, one of the oldest ladies amateur championships in the US.

Top seed Mika Liu repulsed Hannah Wood, 2 and 1, for a second match clash with Taylor Yoshitake, who edged Clara Teixeria of Brazil, 1-up.

Superal, the reigning SEA Games individual gold medalist, and ICTSI teammates Pauline del Rosario and Sofia Chabon, are up for a series of tournaments in the US, including the Junior World, with Superal also lined up to compete in the US Girls Championships next month.
