Pacquiao PBA stint tied to 2016 polls?

MANILA, Philippines - Boxing wasn’t on the menu when Manny Pacquiao was formally introduced to the media yesterday as head coach of newcomer Kia Motors in the PBA.

Aside from basketball, there was a touch of politics.

During the press conference, it was implied that by joining the PBA as head coach or player or both, Pacquiao just found himself a new political vehicle.

The second-term congressman from Sarangani had earlier expressed his interest to seek a senatorial post in the 2016 elections.

Aside from fighting inside the ring, joining the PBA will serve him well in his future campaign.

“While coaching, the TV will focus on you and your behavior. Buong bansa ‘yan (The entire country),” said Palawan Gov. Jose Alvarez, who joined Pacquiao at the head table.

Alvarez is also the chairman of Columbian Autocar Corp., the exclusive distributor of Kia Motors in the country. 

“Baka hindi lang siya maging congressman (He can become more than a congressman). Sa TV natin, 60 million viewers agad ‘yan. At ilan lang ang bumoboto (We have just how many voters)?” Alvarez said.

Also present at the packed Guitar Lounge of the Pacific Star Building in Makati was CAC president Ginia Domingo and PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

As the 70-year-old governor spoke, Pacquiao listened.

“That’s what I think. But I’m not saying that’s his ambition,” added Alvarez, who warned everybody not to underestimate Pacquiao – as a player.

“Huwag niyo i-underestimate yan. May three-pointer yan,” he said.
