S’woods nips Aguinaldo in WGAP leg
MANILA, Philippines - Manila Southwoods outgunned Camp Aguinaldo in a tight duel, 148-145, to capture the Class A crown while Canlubang and Villamor ruled Classes B and C, respectively, at the start of the 2014 WGAP Circuit at Villamor Golf Club recently.
Sophia Blanco fired 40 points under the Modified Stableford scoring system while Eun Hee Kim, Heidi Schettkat and Yong Mi Kim backed her up with 39, 35 and 34 markers, respectively, as the Carmona-based squad outpointed the Aguinaldo ladies in the premier division of the 10-to-play, four-to-count format event organized by Women’s Golf Association of the Phils.
Aguinaldo drew 39 points from Mabel Salivio while Lizbeth Alcantara, Matet Salivio and Arvi Lobangco chipped in 37, 35 and 34 points, respectively, for that 145. Sta. Elena, led by Mina Attwood’s 39 markers, finished third at 131 followed by Villamor (130), Tagaytay Highlands (129), Orchard (127) and Alabang and Forest Hills, which both had 117s.
Attwood, meanwhile, took the individual crown, nipping Mabel Salivio and Forest Hills’ Grace Atienza in the countback.
Canlubang dominated Class B with a 147, beating host Villamor (139) by eight points with Manila Southwoods finishing third at 138. Sta. Elena placed fourth with a 133 followed by Tagaytay Highlands (132), Alabang (131), Riviera (120) and Orchard (110).
Flordeliza Silao shot 39 points to pace Cangolf’s romp with Melona Carida, Terry Parala and Recy Barrientos adding 37, 36 and 35 points, respectively, while Villamor drew 36 markers from Elisa Thoburn, a pair of 35s from Mary Ann Reyes and Gloria De Villa and a 33 from Tet Abad Santos.
Aimee Lee paced Southwoods with 39 points and went on to cop the individual crown in Class B of the event featuring the leading lady golfers from the country’s top clubs.
Villamor’s Team C, led by Lydia Reyes’ 39 points, Nancy Tsay and Alma Buentipo’s 38 markers and Lou Griffiths’ 37 points, flashed its familiarity with the flat but tough layout, pooling a 152 to be Valley Golf by five in Class C. Canlubang came in third with a 146 followed by Camp Aguinaldo and Alabang, which both had 140s, Tagaytay Highlands (139), Forest Hills (136) and Sta. Elena (100).
Forest Hills’ Sohay Uy shot 40 points and edged Young Ok Kwon of Valley and Alabang’s Connie Moncur in the countback to back the individual Class C honors.
