Vicencio, Cruz gain Juntaphil quarters
MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Miguel Vicencio and No. 3 James Rohan Cruz toppled their respective rivals in emphatic fashions to breeze through the quarterfinal round of the 2014 First Gen-Juntaphil Metro Age Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center yesterday.
Vicencio continued to flash top form and trounced Justine Maneja, 4-0, 4-1, while Cruz overpowered Riley Banaag, 4-2, 4-1, to lead the Last 8 cast in the 10-unisex group of Group I tournament sponsored by First Gen Corp. and organized by Juntaphil.
Vicencio faces Jude Hidalgo next after the latter disposed of Brent So, 4-1, 4-0, while Cruz will next tangle with Shant Nuguit, who clobbered Von Saraza, 4-1, 4-0, in the event sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) and sponsored by Wilson as the official ball.
No. 7 Joaquin de Leon also advanced with a 4-1, 5-3 win over Nicolas Katigbak along with No. 4 Edgardo Angara booted out Francis Guillermo, 4-0, 4-1, and Samuel Naguit routed Marc Jarata, 4-0, 4-0.
Pete Coteron, meanwhile, scored a walkover win over Eric Olivarez Jr. in the boys’ 18-and-Under class with Elijah Arevalo storming into the next round with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Warren de la Cruz; and Marcen Gonzales beating Al Rosales, 6-2, 6-2.
Julian Dayrit also gained in the boys’ premier division with a tough 3-6, 6-2 (10-8) win over Emmanuel Fuellas.
Mia So, on the other hand, dominated Gea Chakas, 6-1, 6-2, in girls’ 12-and-U section while Diego Dayrit and Red Directo fashioned out a 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 rout of Shant Nuguit and Karl Carasus in boys’ 12-and-U class, respectively.
In other results, Rafaella Villanueva whipped Mae Perez, 6-0, 6-0, in girls’ 14-and-U, Jules Lazaro defeated Michael Tan, 6-2, 6-0, in boys’ 16-and-U divivision; and Arthur Pantino, Marcus del Rosario, Santino Vistan, Nio Tria and Alex Bulilan all winning their matches in the boys’ 14-and-U category.
Pantino smothered Alan Ordinario, 6-0, 6-0; Del Rosario bundled out Jenric Guanzon, 6-1, 6-0; Vistan held off Angelo Saraza, 6-7(5), 6-4(10-7); Tria dominated Adrian Encinares, 6-1, 6-0; and Bulilan clipped Diego Dayrit, 6-1, 6-2.
