Jackes scores twin kill in karting
MANILA, Philippines - Reigning Asian Karting Mini-ROK champion Flynn Jackes displayed solid composure and end game wits to survive two heart-stopping encounters and duplicate his first leg double-title feat recently in the second leg of the 2014 Petron Blaze 100 ROK Cup Karting Super Series at the Carmona Racetrack.
The 11-year-old Jackes, the lead driver of Team KartMaster Drakar, never buckled down to intense pressure from his rivals till the very end as he again captured both the Mini-ROK XCS and KF Junior Restricted Blaze 100 crowns by just fractions of a second.
Teammate William Casequin also copped his second straight win in the Formula SL Novice Xtra class while Bobby Redpath wound up fifth in the Mini-ROK XCS,
Flynn knew too well that his kickoff leg triumph surely makes him the main target as his fellow young aces are all yearning to bounce back and even up the fight.
That’s exactly what happened as his toughest rival and equally strong contender Eduardo Coseteng Jr. engaged him in a tight duel in the Mini-ROK XCS class throughout the day.
Plunging into this intense battle, Jackes wasn’t armed to the teeth as the team feared the possibility of set-up problems as he was only fourth in the Time Trials with 49.910 seconds or slower by 0.3 of a second than Coseteng who posted the best time of 49.618.
As a young strategist, Flynn banked more on his experience and championship caliber skills in the actual race while maximizing the power of his kart. His game plan worked well as he ruled the Qualifying heat by a hairline 0.061 of a second ahead of Coseteng and did the same in the Pre-Finals where he edged out Coseteng by 0.037 of a second.
Coseteng persisted as he continued to exploit open doors hoping to pull the big one over Jackes. But Jackes never gave him even the slightest chance to redeem himself and even as they went side-by-side dashing to the finish line, Flynn’s nerves of steel kept him in control of the race as he claimed the checquered flag just 0.047 of a second ahead.
Jackes faced the same scenario in the KF Junior Restricted Blaze 100 division where Sean Draeco McLelland challenged him from lap-to-lap, but his presence of mind denied McLelland of his hopes for an upset as Jackes clinched the crown just 0.192 of a second ahead.
