Vetyeka won’t see it coming – Donaire

MACAU – Simpiwe Vetyeka was wrapped in plastic as he moved around the ring Wednesday afternoon in the final phase of his preparations for Saturday’s clash with Nonito Donaire Jr.

“I’m ready to fight,” said the 33-year-old South African, who will stake his WBA featherweight title against Donaire on Saturday evening at the Cotai Arena here.

Because Vetyeka a sweat suit on just days to the fight, Pinoy scribes suspected  if he was having problems with his weight.

Vetyeka brushed the the suspicions off.

“Weight is good. Preparations went very well,” said the reigning champion, who’s in the biggest fight of his career.

He knows that a victory over Donaire can lead to even bigger fights and a purse even bigger than the $100,000 he’s reportedly getting this week.

Vetyeka is 26-2 with 15 knockouts. Donaire is 32-2 with 21 knockouts. Neither boxer has been knocked out .

“I’m ready for my opponent. It’s going to be the biggest fight of my life because I’m facing a three-time world champion,” he said.

“Facing Donaire is the biggest motivation for me. In boxing, he is bigger than me. But now he’s facing me,” said the South African.

Vetyeka is prepared for anything that might happen inside the ring on Saturday. If the fight goes the distance, it goes the distance.

“Anything that comes. I see all of them,” he said.

Vetyeka is just confident that he will beat Donaire – either way.

“If he’s not ready to go 12 rounds that means I will knock him out. But if he’s ready then I will win on points,” he said.

Donaire said he’s looking out for Vetyeka’s right hand and in contrast, Vetyeka said he’s looking out for Donaire’s left.

“My biggest concern? He’s got a powerful left hook. I’m sure he will want to use it. But I have a plan for that. And I have my right,” said Vetyeka.

It’s always the punch that you don’t see coming that hurts most.

Donaire thinks Vetyeka won’t see it coming.

“If he can’t see it coming then he can’t prepare for it,” said Donaire in a private message on Twitter.

Donaire is not skipping a beat here in Macau, the new gambling capital of the world and soon boxing’s capital as well.

Since he arrived here last Saturday, he hasn’t missed going to the gym tucked somewhere in the basement of The Venetian Hotel.

He was at the gym Tuesday evening and did 12 rounds of mitts and shadow-boxing. It was past 11 p.m. when he headed back to his generous suite.

“I feel good,” he said.
