World Slasher Cup-2 lures top breeders

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - It’s going to be a wide-open race when the much-awaited 2014 World Slasher Cup-2 Invitational 8-Cock Derby kicks off at the Smart Araneta Coliseum starting June 2.

Vice-Mayor Jubee Navarro says both local and foreign participants in the event have 50-50 chances of winning the six-day event that will again adopt a 2-2-4 format.

Navarro was the solo champion during the January edition of the meet also held at the Big Dome.

“All matches are about even in cockfighting,” he said during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

Aside from Navarro, expected to lead the Filipino bid in the meet are Atty. Jun Mendoza, who topped the Cong. Unabia one-day six-cocker in Cagayan de Oro City, Barkadahan derby double champion Engr. Sonny Lagon, and three-time World Slasher Cup winners Rey Briones and Dicky Lim, who was also present in the session presented by Shakey’s, Accel, and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, along with Gamefowl Magazine editor Lando Luzong.

Ray Alexander of Alabama banners the powerhouse cast of American game fowl breeders.

Two separate two-cock eliminations will be held on June 2 and 3, followed by a separate two-cock semis on June 4 and 5, and then by the four-cock finals for entries with 2, 2.5, and three points in June 7.

Finally, the event will be capped with the four-cock grand finals on June 8 among undefeated bets with 3.5 or 4 points apiece.
