SWU’s Sanjo sweeps Filoil weekly awards
MANILA, Philippines – Southwestern University’s indefatigable center Landry Sanjo is the Purefoods Best Player of the Week in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
Sanjo led the SWU Cobras to a 3-1 record in the past week, a feat that sent the Cebu-based squad to its first quarterfinals berth in the country’s premier collegiate pre-season tournament.
The Cameroonian center normed 24.2 points and 13.2 rebounds in a stretch where they played four matches in five days.
Sanjo also was among the Gatorade Best Performances of the week that also included strong outings by NU’s Gelo Alolino, La Salle’s Jason Perkins and Jeron Teng and CEU’s Samboy De Leon.
Sanjo also swept Filoil’s weekly awards by bagging the Gatorade Defensive Player Award. The Cobras’ man in the middle recorded 8.0 defensive rebounds, 0.2 steaks, and 1.5 blocks per game.
On Wednesday, May 28, at the San Juan Arena, the Filoil elimination round winds down with teams hoping to end their campaign on a bright note. St. Clare and Mapua, both toting 1-4 records, battle at 2:15 p.m. UP (1-4) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (2-3) clash at 4 p.m.
In juniors action, NCAA rivals La Salle Greenhills and San Sebastian open the day’s games when they collide at 10:45 a.m. The women’s squads of UST and Rizal Technological University play at 12:30 p.m. while the juniors teams of De La Salle Zobel and National University close out the day’s games at 5:45 p.m.
